Brookings Woman Wins $50,000 Powerball Power Play Prize;
Jackpot Grows to $250 Million for Saturday’s Drawing

(Pierre) – Vivian Froehlich of Brookings today claimed a $50,000 Powerball Power Play prize she won in the Wednesday, Feb. 8 drawing.

Froehlich discovered she won when she checked the Lottery’s website. “My husband wouldn’t believe me when I told him,” she said. “He thought that maybe I’d won $100.”

Froehlich’s ticket matched four of the five white balls and the red Powerball to win the game’s third prize of $10,000. Because she added the Power Play feature, and the prize multiplier was five, her ticket was worth $50,000.

The Power Play feature allows players to multiply their prizes, except the jackpot, by two to five times. Players can add the prize multiplier for an additional $1 per play at the time of purchase. The Power Play number from 2-5 is randomly chosen with a prize wheel during each Powerball drawing.

Froehlich’s win was also lucky for a new lotto retailer. Froehlich bought the winning “quick pick” ticket at Schoon’s Pump ‘N Pak in Brookings only thirteen days after the store began selling lotto tickets on Jan. 26. Schoon’s will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Because no one matched all six numbers in Wednesday’s drawing, the Powerball jackpot for the Saturday, Feb. 11 drawing grows to an estimated $250 million, making it the 6th largest in the game’s history.

Norman Lingle, executive director of the Lottery, said the big jackpot generates a lot of excitement for players and retailers. “We want people to have fun, but ask them to play responsibly. It only takes one ticket to win,” he said
