Powerball Jackpot Run Provides More Than $500,000 in
State Revenue
(Pierre) –
The winning ticket for last Saturday’s $214.7 million
Powerball jackpot was sold in Delaware, but ticket sales during the
jackpot run resulted in more than a half million dollars in revenue to
the state.
While 50 cents of each $1 Powerball purchase in South Dakota is used
for prizes, another 23 cents is used for revenue for the state’s general
fund and the capital construction fund.
For the 16-draw jackpot run that began August 18 and ended October 9,
South Dakota players bought $2,268,436 in Powerball tickets, providing
$521,740 in revenue to the state.
South Dakota players won $414,497 in prizes during the jackpot run,
including one of the game’s $100,000 second prizes, won by Luann Boyden
of Platte in the Sept. 18 drawing.
The 355 lotto retailers across the state also benefited from the
increased sales a large jackpot run can bring. Approximately
five-and-a-half cents of every Powerball ticket purchase goes to
retailers in the form of sales commissions and bonuses. The recent
Powerball jackpot run earned retailers nearly $119,000 in commissions and
bonuses.
In fiscal year 2004 (July 1, 2003 – June 30, 2004), sales of lotto
tickets raised $4.82 million in revenue. The first $1.4 million of
revenue went to the state’s general fund, with the balance of $3.42
million going to the state’s capital construction fund, which is used for
water development projects, ethanol production incentives and state
highway projects.
The jackpot for tonight’s Powerball drawing is $10 million. Powerball
is played in 27 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin
Islands.
